Nike Run Club's Biggest Flaw
A journal entry from my third week of marathon training, but also why I've (mostly) abandoned my former favorite app.
On Tuesdays, we … journal about our experience training for the New York City Marathon. At least until it happens in November. These posts are paid-only because a) I am not an exercise scientist or licensed personal trainer with the authority to share actionable advice to a general audience b) they are written in a loose style with a lot of jargon that I’d definitely take time to explain if this was a public Leg Day post c) writing about exercise is embarrassing and I am vain.
Things went well last week. Despite our travel schedule and a decent amount of inclement weather, I managed to do all three of my key runs and plenty of biking. I still didn’t get much intentional cross-training in (I only attempted to do bike laps once) but you gotta have something to work on right?
I’ve been tracking all of my activity on Strava, which I’ve been using dutifully since last summer. For long-time friends and followers, this might be a bit of a surprise. I was once a pretty faithful devotee of the Nike Run Club. I even wrote about it’s best feature, the guided runs, in a piece for the Wall Street Journal last Februrary. So why have I all but abandoned it?
