Leg Day is a newsletter about the pursuit of joy as a city cyclist.
I launched this newsletter thinking it would make sense to put together weekly roundups of rides, events, and sales that would be of interest to other cyclists. But in the early months, where I had basically no readers, I realized I wasn’t actually driving any attendance to these events. And, these posts were a pain to put together.
But now that spring has sprung again, a bunch of people I admire have emerged from hibernation with a bunch of banger events I simply need you all to know about. It’s inspired me to experiment to try doing regular roundups again, this time at a much more manageable MONTHLY cadence with a paywall after the first few items.
BUT FIRST …
I’m having a minor crisis about the identity of this newsletter. I’ve gotten a lot of great feedback from close friends about what people have enjoyed and want to see more of, but I want to make sure that the newsletter isn’t just serving people who know me. Especially because a bunch of you are paying subscribers! There are some questions about demographics (where do you live, how much do you bike rather than how much money do you make) and past content, as well as one or two about things that are coming down the pipe in the future. I hope to hear from you!
Bike Plant’s 4th Birthday
Bike Plant is probably my favorite New York City bike shop, not just because they’ve saved my butt more times than I can count. You might be surprised to learn it is almost only four years old! In honor of the birthday, the team there is hosting an alley cat race on April 19th at 1 pm that I’m sure will be a banger. Your $15 ticket to race ($10 if you’re a bike messenger) will fund the shop’s community repair fund, which allows the team to subsidize repairs for people in need and donate bikes to migrants. I’ll see you there!
Bike 2 Hike
My internet friend Gabby recently hosted her first Bike 2 Hike in Queens last month. Her squad did a 8 mile ride, a short mindfulness exercise, then a 3 mile hike. This month, she’s hosting two more. There will be one in Manhattan on April 13 and another in the Bronx on April 27. The location and RSVP link are still to come, but you can follow Gabby on Instagram for more details. I’m going to try and come to the one in the Bronx!
